Van Ness family papers, [ca. 1850-1890].

Includes letters to Captain Henry Van Ness, his pilot licenses for the harbor of San Francisco, and accounts; correspondence of his wife, Mary Ann, including an 1850 letter describing her voyage from Boston to California on the Northern Light, with stop in Rio de Janeiro, and letters to her from California State Hospitals at Agnews (F.W. Hatch) and Stockton (William H. Mays); and correspondence and accounts of their children, Tillie, James and William Henry. Some letters relate to swamp land, district no. 118 in Contra Costa County; some letters from Moses L. Wicks, Lansing B. Mizner, Thomas A. Brown and the Southern Pacific Railroad Company.
